Hotel Encís Empordà

The charming hotel Encís d'Empordà is a hotel with stories that invites you to discover the magic of an authentic 16th-century Catalan farmhouse. Located in the heart of Empordanet, this carefully restored farmhouse breathes history in every stone. Surrounded by the serene beauty of the landscape between sea and mountains, Encís d'Empordà is not just a place to sleep but a corner where each room tells a unique story, inspired by anonymous characters who might have inhabited this farmhouse in different eras.

The original farmhouse was built in 1580, preserving to this day original architectural elements like thick stone walls, wooden beams, and ancient floors that give it a unique character. Its privileged location, in an idyllic plain masterfully described by Josep Pla, offers impressive views of the natural landscape and the tranquility typical of Empordà.

The seven rooms at Encís d'Empordà are meticulously designed, inspired by anonymous characters that reflect different historical and cultural moments of Empordà:

  1. El Hereu: Represents the firstborn of a traditional Catalan family, whose room is located in the noble area of the farmhouse, around the celebration hall, where parents and the heir lived. The Hereu had the right to inherit the house and lands, as well as the obligation to maintain them for future generations. Decorated with authentic frescoes as they were done in the past and 19th-century furniture, this room showcases the wealth and opulence of this grand farmhouse.

  2. La Pubilla: Inspired by the female figure who inherited the family patrimony in the absence of a male heir, this room set in the 1950s reflects the golden age of cinema in Costa Brava. During those years, the region became the setting for major productions like Pandora and the Flying Dutchman starring Ava Gardner and The Last Summer with Elizabeth Taylor. La Pubilla was a lover of cinema and theater, something reflected in her elegant decor and carefully selected vintage details.

  3. El Indiano: Inspired by the Indiano tradition during the 18th and 19th centuries in Empordà and Costa Brava, when many local sailors left for America seeking fortune. Some returned enriched, boosting the local economy and leaving a very characteristic architectural legacy known as Indiano architecture. This room represents one of these adventurers and is decorated with elegant tropical wood furniture, reflecting the opulence of 19th-century style.
  4. El Marinero: A tribute to the adventurous and seafaring spirit of Empordà, a land that has always looked to the sea and lived from it. This room tells the story of a sailor born in Palamós, who sailed around the world. Through various decorative details, you can discover his maritime routes, memories of other cultures, and the longing for the woman who always waited for him at home.
  5. El Viajero: Inspired by the 1930s, this room tells the story of a young Empordanese reporter fascinated by airplanes and the dream of freedom offered by the emerging aviation industry. At the beginning of the 20th century, Europe was immersed in great industrial, political, and social changes, with the emergence of new countries and opportunities. Some restless young people decided to leave Empordà to discover new worlds. The room evokes this adventurous spirit, with objects and details that refer to distant and exotic places visited by the traveler.
  6. La Poeta: A room dedicated to the rich literary tradition of Empordà, land of renowned writers and poets like Josep Pla, Caterina Albert, and Mercè Rodoreda, who portrayed rural life with both harshness and beauty. The room is presided over by a fragment of Joan Maragall’s poem Empordà painted on the wall, which describes the mythical birth of Empordà, born from the love between a mermaid and a shepherd.

  7. La Artista: Tells the story of a bohemian painter from the 1970s, a period of artistic and cultural explosion in Empordà, marked by movements like surrealism and pop art, with Salvador Dalí as the leading figure. This room also pays homage to the painter Josep Niebla, who lived in the farmhouse for over 30 years, reflecting his creative and bohemian spirit with artistic and vibrant decor.
